A Hebrew memoir: אנחנו מיפו: נגיעות מחיים של פעם (We Are From Jaffa) by brothers Avi and Rami Benbenishty.
With a loving and clear-eyed smile, the brothers revisit their childhood in Jaffa's Bulgarian community in the 1950s and 1960s. Through the eyes of Avi, the younger brother, come the people and places that colored their lives: the neighborhood rabbi, the school principal checking how worn your jeans were, Bulgarian foods and sweets, daily visits to the Nuzha club, and football, lots of football, from the sandy neighborhood pitch to games alongside legends such as Uri Malmilian and Oded Machnes.
In the background stands a close, protective immigrant community working hard to build a future in a new country. Illustrated by Danny Kerman. Paperback, Gefen.
