This is the original Hebrew edition of Hamutal Bar-Yosef's historical novel The Wealthy, העשירים: כרוניקה של משפחה יהודית (1763-1948).
The author calls the book a gift to the State of Israel for its seventieth birthday from someone who was seven when it was founded. It tells of the state's lesser-known founders from an unusual angle: its heroes are not socialist pioneers from Eastern Europe but sober-minded merchants, industrialists and politicians who lived in Germany and England and rose to the top of society there.
The family chronicle spans five generations, from late eighteenth-century Poland through Germany and England, and ends in 1948 with the failed battle of Tira and the Declaration of Independence. Readers meet nineteenth-century Prussia, British politics and royalty, and Mandatory Palestine. 420 pages, 2017.
