Rachel Bernheim-Friedman returned from the war and began her life again, just as her mother foresaw. And throughout her life and adulthood, she carried the memories of her youth int he brutal shadow of the Holocaust, coming-of-age in the most harrowing of circumstances. From her poverty-stricken, yet happy childhood in Hungary, strongly influenced by her family and community’s Zionist ideology; to the hell of Auschwitz and her escape from the Death March in the final days of the war; finally reaching the tumultuous period in Palestine prior to the establishment of the State of Israel.
